SPECIAL EVENTS / SPECIAL PEOPLE

The 148th Annual Emancipation Celebration will be held at the Gallia County Fairgrounds in Gallipolis, Ohio on Saturday, September 17th & Sunday, September 18th, 2011. The planned event promises excitement and entertainment for all age groups.

History will come alive with the Civil War Re-enactors from the 5th & 12th regiments of the U.S.C.T. who will be encamping at the fairgrounds. Re-enactors President Lincoln (portrayed by Jim Rubin) and Mrs. Lincoln (portrayed by Joyce P. Browning), along with Frederick Douglass (portrayed by Michael Crutcher Sr.) will grace the event.

Saturday Keynote Speaker will be Christian Scott, Teacher in the Gallipolis City School System. Music on Saturday will be rendered by the River Valley Marching Band, the Burlington Men’s Chorus of the First Baptist Church, Burlington, Ohio and United in Christ Community Choir of the Grace & Mercy Apostolic Church, Parkersburg, WV. Saturday Invocation by Reverend Calvin Minnis of Corinth Baptist Church, Rio Grande, Ohio. Our own Andy Gilmore and Glenn Miller will Emcee Saturday and Sunday’s events. Saturday evening beginning at 5:00 p.m. all are invited to stay and enjoy the Homecoming Reception, with food, drink and entertainment at the Gallia County Fairgrounds.

Sunday sermon will be delivered by the Reverend Keith Jackson of Zion Baptist Church, Beaver, Ohio. Music will be provided in the morning session by Zion Beaver Choir of the Zion Baptist Church, Beaver, Ohio and in the afternoon session by Ordinary People of Gallipolis, Ohio under the direction of Deacon Christian Scott. Keynote speaker will be Timothy F. Johnson, Ph.D., Chairman of Frederick Douglass Foundation, Washington, DC.

Inflatables R Us will have a bounce house, wet/dry funslide and ballons available both Saturday & Sunday. Columbus Zoo & Aquarium presentation Sunday at noon.

We are expecting dignitaries from our local, state and national offices. Everyone is invited and welcome to attend. Both days include food booths, arts & crafts, health fair, birthday chronicles, games for the youth and fun for all in attendance.
