The 153rd Annual Emancipation Celebration will be held at the Bob Evans Farms located at 10854 State Route 588, Rio Grande, Ohio on Saturday, September 17th & Sunday, September 18th, 2016. The planned event promises excitement and entertainment for all age groups.

The Gallia County Emancipation Celebration Committee is pleased to announce our Sunday, September 18th Keynote Speaker is the President of Ohio University, Dr. Roderick J. McDavis. This will be on the main stage at 2:00 pm.

Friday evening beginning at 6:00 p.m. all are invited to enjoy the Homecoming Reception, with food, drink to be held on the second floor of the Ariel Theater. This will be followed at 7 pm with a concert by the Dale Rawlins Singers in the first floor auditorium of the Ariel Theater.

History will come alive with the Civil War Re-enactors from the 5th & 12th regiments of the U.S.C.T. who will be encamping at the fairgrounds. Re-enactors: Fred Smith & wife will portray a Black Civil War Soldier from slave to soldier in the morning. Frederick Douglas (portrayed by Michael Crutcher) & Abraham Lincoln (portrayed by Bob Ervin) will take the stage on the afternoon of Saturday, September 17th shortly after the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium presentation Saturday at 1:00 pm.

Music on Saturday will be rendered by the River Valley High School marching band, Civil War Musician Steve Ball and Brittany Franklin & Company. Gallipolis resident Linae Scott with take the stage Saturday afternoon with her Martin Luther King presentation. Saturday events will also include Zumba on the BEF grounds, weather permitting.

Our own Andy Gilmore and Glenn Miller will Emcee Saturday and Sunday’s events. The Sunday sermon will be delivered by Reverend Keith Jackson, of Zion Beaver Baptist Church, Beaver, OH. Music will be provided in the morning session by the Zion Beaver Baptist Church Choir, of Beaver, OH and in the afternoon session by the Saint Albans Men’s Chorus from St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church of St. Albans, WV. Sunday afternoon Keynote speaker will be Ohio University President, Dr. Roderick J. McDavis. Carriage rides and pony lead rides will be available by Rio Valley Stables free of charge.

We are expecting dignitaries from our local, state and national offices. Everyone is invited and welcome to attend. Both days include food booths, arts & crafts, health fair, birthday chronicles, games for the youth and fun for all in attendance.
