The 154th Annual Emancipation Celebration will be held at the Bob Evans Farms located at 10854 State Route 588, Rio Grande, Ohio on Saturday, September 16th & Sunday, September 17th, 2017. The planned event promises excitement and entertainment for all age groups.

The Gallia County Emancipation Celebration Committee is pleased to announce our Sunday, September 17th Keynote Speaker is Dr. John Mattox, Curator of the Underground Railroad Museum in Flushing, Ohio. This will be on the main stage at 2:00 pm.

Friday evening beginning at 6:00 p.m. all are invited to enjoy the Homecoming Reception, with food, drink to be held on the second floor of the Ariel Theater. This will be followed at 7 pm with a concert by James Stokes & Christina Armstrong along with an Interpretive Dance performance by Gallia County Sub-District Youth with Jennifer Griffin as Choreographer in the first floor auditorium of the Ariel Theater.

History will come alive with the Civil War Re-enactors from the 5th & 12th regiments of the U.S.C.T. who will be encamping at the fairgrounds. Re-enactors: Fred Smith & wife will portray a Black Civil War Soldier from slave to soldier in the morning. Frederick Douglas (portrayed by Michael Crutcher) & Abraham Lincoln (portrayed by Gerald Payn) will take the stage on the afternoon of Saturday, September 16th shortly after the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium presentation Saturday at 3:00 pm.

Music on Saturday will be rendered by the River Valley High School marching band, Civil War Musician Steve Ball and Character Karaoke. Gallia County Sheriff Matt Champlin with take the stage Saturday afternoon to give remarks to the youth of Gallia County. Saturday events will also include a Relay Race on the BEF grounds, weather permitting and COSI on Wheels located in a COSI Kiosk Trailer beginning Saturday at 1:00 pm.

Our own Andy Gilmore and Glenn Miller will Emcee Saturday and Sunday’s events. The Sunday sermon will be delivered by Reverend Dr. Michael Poke, of St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, St. Albans, WV. Music will be provided in the morning session by a Combined Churches Choir and in the afternoon session by The Geiger Family of St. Albans, WV. Sunday afternoon Keynote speaker will be

Carriage rides and pony lead rides will be available by Rio Valley Stables free of charge.

We are expecting dignitaries from our local, state and national offices. Everyone is invited and welcome to attend. Both days include food booths, arts & crafts, health fair, birthday chronicles, games for the youth and fun for all in attendance.
